There is no shortage of places to eat and drink while on the island of Caye Caulker. If you love fresh seafood like I do, you’re in for a treat as nearly every dining establishment offers a fresh catch. The higher priced restaurants are right on the beach and overlook the water. A premium view means premium prices on meals and drinks.
The Rainbow Grill is one such place. It’s right along the water and offers an incredible view of the shoreline and nearby docks. We stopped by for a light lunch, ordering the ceviche and snapper special along with a couple drinks. The place wasn’t overly busy but the service was incredible slow and when we received our food, it wasn’t anything special. As a ceviche connoisseur of sorts, I was disappointed in the lack of flavor. The less than steller food and service didn’t match the price tag when we got our bill. It was easily the most expensive, and disappointing, meal we had on the island. The only thing that didn’t disappoint was the view.
We found the best place to hang out and have a couple drinks was at the Sip n Dip Beach Bar. They offered a variety of drinks and had special happy hour pricing throughout the day. The long dock stretching out into the ocean offered several different seating options overlooking the water and there were also couches and tables available inside the tiki area. Additionally, you can take your drink in the water and float on a relaxing tube or sit in a hammock. We spent time every day at the Sip n Dip, either on the dock or in the water.

One evening, we decided to stop at the Happy Lobster after we saw their sign advertising an appetizer and complete fresh fish meal for two with several sides and a salad for less than $25. We were not disappointed. Our meal was HUGE and the fish was cooked perfectly. We could have easily had two meals each out of the one we were served. However, it was so delicious we ate it all.
Every night on the way back to our apartment, we walked by a restaurant with a whole pig roasting out front. We finally decided to stop in La Cubana for dinner and we were so happy we did. While neither of us ordered the pig, we were blown away by not only the quality of our dinners but also the price! La Cubana is a hidden gem right along the beach but away from the main area on the island. Our biggest regret was not finding the restaurant earlier in our stay – we definitely would have stopped by for more meals.
I ordered the whole lobster which was seasoned and cooked perfectly. Plus it was only $15 US! Russ ordered a whole snapper for $10 US. Incredible value for what you get! Plus they offered 2 for 1 drink specials that we took advantage of. A couple of stray pups taking a stroll along the beach stopped by at the end of our dinner.
If you enjoy fresh seafood – you would love the options available in Caye Caulker. I wish we would have had more time to explore many of the other options on the island.
